It takes one hell of a performance to simultaneously bring an audience to floods of tears and to its feet but that’s exactly what The Civil Wars are capable of. With their sweet yet powerful songs, Joy Williams and John Paul White have an electrifying intimacy that you don’t often see in the music industry these days.

Tipped to do great things back in early 2011, we e-met The Civil Wars through a mutual friend (shout out to Mike… cheers bud!) and then watched in awe as the world quickly fell in love with Joy and John Paul. Fast forward through two global tours supporting Adele, countless TV performances and appearances and now two nominations for Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/ Group Performance at this year’s Grammy’s. And still Joy and John Paul perform together like they’re the only people in the room.

The Civil Wars were forged together following a songwriting workshop in 2008 where a bond was formed in their natural magnetism towards each other. You’d be forgiven for assuming they write and sing about their own relationship highs and lows but you’d be wrong. Despite their incredible intimacy both on and off stage, they’re not a couple. Armed with just John Paul’s guitar, their songs need no further accompaniment — all you need are the lyrics and theirs beautiful harmonies.

On a blazing hot afternoon late last Summer, we had the honour of filming The Civil Wars perform their hit single Barton Hollow. John Paul, with his lilting southern accent and Johnny Depp-esque looks and Joy, with her sparkling smile and warm disposition, were an absolute delight to work with. Big thanks to The Civil Wars, Nate at Sensibility Music and Anna at Purple PR for this amazing opportunity.

March 2012 sees the welcome return of The Civil Wars to the UK in their first national headline tour. Sadly you’re a bit late to this party as tickets are like gold dust! But fear not, you’ll be hearing a lot more of The Civil Wars in 2012 and beyond. Your time will come when you can see what we’re raving about. In the meantime, enjoy our session!
